I moped around most of the weekend, and even though I was invited on a boat trip for Memorial Day, I declined. Matty had rented the boat and was going fishing with some guys from our soccer club. I was just in no mood.

On Tuesday morning, I was the first one in the office. I even beat my father in. I couldn’t sleep, and after an early morning workout, I decided that sitting around after my shower was no good. I needed to keep my mind busy and put it to good use on some of the outstanding work that I left on Friday.

One by one, my interns came in, and I assigned them something but no Rory. 9:00 AM came and went without her calling or coming into the office. I was starting to get worried. The way Derek treated her on Saturday, I wonder if he assaulted her in a jealous rage. I kept thinking the worst until 10:45 AM when I got a knock at my door.

“Come in.”

There was Rory, and she looked horrible like she’d been crying. I rose to meet her as she came in the door.

“I’m sorry I’m late, it’s been a bad morning.”

“You’ve been crying. What happened?”

“It’s nothing.”

I shut the door and lead Rory by her arm to one of the chairs in front of my desk, then sat next to her.

“What’s nothing?”

“I don’t want to discuss it.”

“Rory, you don’t have to be afraid to tell me things. I’m not going to judge you.”

“I saw the look you gave me on Saturday. You disapprove of Derek.”

“I’m just going to come right out and say it. He’s abusive, and I don’t like it.”

“He’s not abusive. He wants things perfect between us.”

“Oh, you mean like you not gaining weight?”

“You heard that?”

“Yes, I did. What kind of asshole says that to a woman he loves?”

“He just wants me to be healthy.”

“He wants to control you. I won’t even tell you what he said to me when you were getting him a soda.”

“Derek told me what you said. How could you?”

I’m shocked, and my mouth drops open. “How could I? I defended you.”

“He told me you said you would love to get me alone.”

I look at her incredulously and vigorously shake my head.

“That’s not what I said. He’s a fucking liar. Do you want to know what he said?”

She looks at me, and before she has a chance to speak, I tell her.

“He told me, hands-off. He knows what happens when you work in an office alone with no one else around. Derek said you were his. How would he know what happens in an office late at night? Does he do it? Did he do it to you?”

“No. I started working at my grandparent’s office, and I met him again. We started dating. He’s good to me.”

“Rory, if by controlling and being abusive is good, I prefer not to be.”

She begins to cry, and I’m not sure what I should do, so I pull her against my chest.
